The future of watch phones

Strangely enough during this year’s CES, the show that presents the latest products and digital trends for consumers, there was little move around watch phones. Practically the only thing that vaguely related to watch phones was the inPulse Bluetooth watch, now in advanced prototype form. This made me think of the future of watch phones, if any. As we’ve learned from past, there’s a chance watch phones were just a little thing some manufacturers tried to get to market, in hope they will create a need around it. This is the case with almost every new type of gadget and nothing makes us believe this was not the case.

What’s different from case to case is the rate of success, and this is what counts after all: to get a new products that consumers will embrace. My take on watch phones is that we haven’t heard everything from them yet and in a few years the technology will mature (think miniaturization and simple interface design advances) to allow a fair amount of functions and usability to be packed into a watch phone, enough to replace the short term use of a mobile phone. Maybe you’ll use a watch phone while going to get some groceries but you wouldn’t leave your cell phone home when going in vacation. There’s even the possibility to use it as a webcam for laptop via Bluetooth using the integrated camera in most watch phones.

It will all depend of the number of models users will have as an option to choose from and in this case competition is a must, one that can drive the industry forward or stall it. Price will also pay an important part, as early ‘serious’ watch phones sold for too much, almost as much as a high end laptop, which is crazy, even for early adopters. This is one thing manufacturers didn’t realize that watch phones are accessories, they will never be a main device and as in any other niche, accessories must be cheaper than the actual products they accessorize. When people will realize that I can see the watch phone trend going up.
