I don’t know if there’s someone out there that doesn’t know and like James Bond, the spy of all spies. The most memorable things that remain in my mind after seeing each new movie is the new shiny gadgets that he uses to perform its stunts: cars, watches, special weapons and clothes disguised in weapons.
I’m pretty sure the next James Bond, or at least the one after that will use a watch phone. Why? Because regular watches don’t say anything about the third millennium, the one we’re living in. In this short post I’ll try an exercise of mind and see what I can come up with regarding the uses James Bond could find for well equipped watch phone:
- Radio control via WiFi (Bluetooth only works on short ranges) of its Aston Martin, Bentley or BMW super car. Of course images as seen by the driver are delivered to the watch screen
- GPS navigation. If James finds himself lost in a jungle the watch phone will surely guide him towards the nearest phone booth where he can request support. Also the included sun charger will make sure it won’t run out of juice during his trips
- Secret hacking tool for electronic devices. That’s more like System Shock but it can be done with intelligent engineering
- Pico projector. If Mr Bond has to make a short presentation what better way to enlarge the plans by projecting them on a wall nearby. The technology evolved enough our days to get things miniaturized enough for watch use
- Internet navigation: In the unlikely event that James doesn’t know where to eat there’s a handy browser he can use by just turning his wrist and press a few buttons
- Placing actual calls: don’t forget that a watch phone is actually useful for talking to your mates, as James Bond does to remain updated on the mission intelligence. SMS replies are done via voice recognition too.

The next James Bond watch, made by LG?
So, how do you see a watch phone in the hands of James Bond. Will it be good enough for normal use or it will remain pure fantasy?
